Picture Problems

Well, according to the guy at National Camera, our camera is underexposing and we need to send it back to the manufacturer to have them look at / repair it. Before I do that, I am trying to find a replacement so that we have some way to record Anna's birthday and other events! Perhaps I will buy a few disposable digital cameras to tide us over. Or, I may be able to get our old camera to work for a little while. We'll see. In any regard, there may be a lack of photos for awhile until we have this "technical difficulty" resolved!

2 Bottom Teeth

Tooth #2 is about to make an appearance. At the very beginning of this random video you can see the one that is through the skin and a very white partner about to poke through next to it.

Bye Bye Bottles

We are on our first 24 hours of no more formula, no more bottles. We ran out of formula on Monday and decided since Anna will be one in only a week and a 1/2, we might as well take this opportunity to make the switch. I had decided awhile back that when we switched to whole milk we would get rid of the bottles too - making a clean transition to sippy cups and regular cups. This change is proving to be more difficult for me than it is for Anna.

Since birth, Anna has never been one to snuggle for long periods of time. She may give you a little hug or a kiss, or crawl on your lap for a minute or two, but not much more. The exception to this has always been Anna's morning and nighttime bottles. During these times I was guaranteed at least 15 minutes of snuggle time. Anna would have me hold the bottle so she could play with her hair with her 2 hands. Oh how I loved that time!!!

But, it's time to say goodbye to that phase and move on to the next. We are finding new ways to get those precious moments. Reading stories (particularly "Wiggle Waggle", Anna's favorite) is a great opportunity to snuggle for awhile. And we just adjust by adding many more hugs and kisses in throughout the day.

The other big change for us is one regarding sleep. I had mentioned in a few previous posts that Anna is waking up in the night. Since around 6 months of age Anna has been a very predictable 11-12 hour sleeper at night. She would go down at 6-6:30pm and we wouldn't hear from her until 6-6:30am. As Anna has gotten older, this seems to be changing - as is our approach.

From the beginning Steve and I followed a pretty steady pattern of how we dealt with sleep and how we helped Anna learn to fall asleep on her own and to soothe herself. This involved a bedtime routine, as well as a few nights of "crying it out". While sometimes controversial, this worked for us. Anna never cried longer than 10 mins and her cries didn't escalate - they faded out and after 2 nights it didn't happen again.

Now however, when Anna awakes she is very visibly afraid of something. She sometimes doesn't know where she is and her cries escalate if not tended to. I don't feel comfortable with the method we have used in the past, so we are in unchartered waters for us. We have been taking the approach of going in and comforting her, rocking her for a few minutes and helping her get her bearings and then laying her back down. Typically she is back asleep within 10-15 mins. It's hard to know if we are fostering a bad habit, or are approaching this in the wrong way, but my gut says she needs cuddles and reassurance - so that's what we are doing. It's our hope that by doing this she regains the confidence that we are nearby and she need not be afraid.

Check Me Out

Climbing the stairs is Anna's new hobby. She goes up 1 or 2, turns around and slides down, repeat. Repeat again, and again. It's fun to watch how she analyzes something and will not quit until she has it figured out.

In the past few weeks we have learned quite a bit about Anna's personality. Anna is very independent, and has been since she was born. This independence is asserting itself in new ways now that Anna is older though. For example, Anna may decide one day that she likes chicken and she can't eat it fast enough. The next day, or two days later, she may put it in her mouth and gag and spit it out as if it were poisonous. Anna also wants to do things on her own - like climb up stairs, get her toys or books, drink from her bottle or sippy cup, etc. She is a little girl with her own wants and needs, with a very determined spirit. Hard to believe that about a year ago she was so tiny and relied on us for everything.

First Tooth!

Anna's first tooth arrived a week or so ago. It's one of the front bottom teeth. While this picture is not the most flattering, in it you can see the tooth if you look hard enough. I have been trying to capture it, but due to camera issues and Anna covering it up with her tongue this has been a difficult feat!

We expect it's partner to poke through the gums shortly...it's quite white and puffy as well. She's growing up so fast!!!

Wild Child

Anna tends to have bursts of energy now, right before her bath time. This video captures a little bit of what these might look like. They are tons of fun and typically quite hilarious - as Anna tries out various feats with her new mobility.

Adoring Daddy

Really, can smiles get any better than these Anna has for her daddy?

Big hugs

Sleep and Sunshine

Yesterday brought long naps (for both Anna and I) and a full night of uninterrupted sleep for all(phew!). That, paired with a day of sunshine and beautiful breezes made for a great day today! We spent many hours outside...going on a walk, running errands, playing in the grass and going to the local fair in our city. What a wonderful break from the dreary days we had earlier this
week!

Busy Little Bee

And we go and we go and we go. No matter if we are up for 3 hours in the middle of the night, or if we don't sleep in, we are constantly on the move. No time for food, we just want to go! Mom and dad are exhausted, too many middle of the night calls lately. A phase that too will pass we know. And, who can be mad when you hear "da da da da daddy" at 1am?

Little Reader

Anna loves her books. She will sit and listen to the same book 3 times in a row if you will read it to her. It's fun to see her remember the animals, the pages and even some of the sound effects Steve and I will make. We hope she always loves to read.

And I Was Worried...

about having a babysitter?

Yesterday the morning began with Anna tearing pages out of her books and going to all of the places she is very well aware she is not supposed to go. Breakfast passed with a few bites, then a tantrum to get out of the highchair. All of the options I provided to Anna for lunch were spit out onto the tray, and the sippy cup of milk was thrown on the floor - then at me. Nothing would make little Anna smile. 15 minutes before Mikhaila, our sitter, arrived - Anna took a spill hitting her lip on a chair. More tears.

Typically it's pretty easy to leave the house when Anna is being watched by family - yesterday, I was not so excited to leave. I wasn't sure if our young sitter could deal with what that day had in store. But I left, Anna sound asleep for her afternoon nap.

A few hours later Steve arrived home to news that Anna was very good, in good spirits and other than not drinking her milk, she had a great time. So much so that she didn't want Mikhaila to leave.

HA! To think I was worried. Perhaps that was just what the dr. ordered for both of us!

Thank you mom for a fun afternoon / evening of shopping and birthday fun!

3am Returns

3am has become almost a routine get-together in our house. About every 2 or 3 days, Anna awakes at 3am and is in need of cuddles, a drink, a story or just some soothing. It started with us going in when she would cry and she was sitting up (asleep or awake), and has progressed to what I saw at 3 this morning...Anna standing up and shaking the bar of the crib.

While I have read that this is normal behavior for this age, given they are going through a lot of things - motor skill overload, 12-month growth spurt, teething, separation anxiety - it doesn't make 3am any more friendly.

That said, I still always end up smiling. A few nights ago after drinking a bottle at 3am, Anna started clapping and waving her arms in a way that she had just learned the previous few days/week. Obviously it was top of mind for her. This morning after 1/2 of a bottle, Anna turned around, smiled at me, crawled up so her head was on my chest and sat and gave me a nice long hug. Then, pointed at the picture of herself on the wall and proceeded to tell me "baby, baby, baby". Yes, you are forever my baby, baby, baby.

Happy Birthday Penny!

Happy Birthday Penny, we hope you have a wonderful day and have time to celebrate! Maybe go splash in the rain for awhile! :) Enjoy your day!

What's New

I have been lagging a bit on the blog for a variety of reasons, one of which is my camera (still hasn't been fixed), another of which is we are much busier now that Anna is all over the place!

Anna is crawling all over the house, in the cupboards, up the stairs (she climbed all the way last night!), pulling herself up on furniture, trying to walk along the furniture, etc. It's been a lot of fun, but it certainly requires a heightened level of surveillance!

Other new developments include:

  • First tooth! Yes, Anna finally has a tooth! It's one of her front bottom teeth, which has poked through the gums and is slowly inching its way out. Tooth number two will likely be soon to follow.

  • More words: Anna is very talkative these days. Her favorites are still "hi" and "baby" and "dada", but she mixes it up with "mama", and a few others. She still likes making animal noises as well.

  • More foods: Anna has shown me that she likes chicken strips, fries, cantaloupe, swedish meatballs (seriously, she ate THREE of them for lunch yesterday!) and many other foods. She has also tried regular milk and she loves it!

I had a wonderful birthday, many celebrations over the weekend and yet this week. Thank you to everyone! Here are a few pictures from our celebration on Sunday:

Mommy's Little Helper

Anna was kind enough to help me with the laundry this morning, making sure all of the clothes were out of the basket for me to fold. She was pretty cute, taking each piece out - inspecting it, and then handing it to me. Is it too soon to teach her to fold?! :)

It's been a fairly uneventful week this week. Anna still has her cold, so we returned to the doctor yesterday morning to see what we could do. They decided since it's been dragging on so long to try some medicine and it's already working! Anna is catching up on her sleep, she has been taking long naps today and she has slept in a few days this week too. Hopefully this will be out of her system in the next day or two. Despite a cough and runny nose (and a tooth slowly working it's way through the gums!), Anna has been in wonderful spirits.

Grandpa and Penny came to visit yesterday afternoon and for dinner, Anna loved showing them her new toys, showing them how she eats all of her dinner and of course making them laugh.

This morning I went over to play with our friends' son, Alex, so that Theresa could take and nap and spend somet time with her new infant. What fun we had playing in the sandbox! Anna enjoyed a morning with Grandma while I was away.

My apologies for the lack of pictures as of late. It seems our camera is broken (well sort of anyway), so we will be taking it in this weekend to see if it can be repaired, or we will be shopping for a new one. Let's hope it's a small repair!

New Crawl

Anna now switches between this "normal" crawl and her army crawl. It depends on where she is and what she is after. If she wants to get somewhere fast, she will normal crawl for the first 5-10 steps and then move to her tummy and worm her way quite quickly to her destination. She is pulling herself up to stand more frequently now, and she also will get up on her hands and feet with her rear in the air and her head on the floor. Each day there seems to be something new in her repertoire. Lots of fun!!

Lunch with Grandma

Today we went to Grandma Mary's for lunch and conversation. Anna had a great time playing toys and seeing Grandma, but her favorite part was the special lunch that Grandma made for her! She had a HUGE pancake with maple syrup, strawberries and bananas. Anna didn't stop making her "yummmmm" noise the entire time she ate. AND, when she was done eating, she was so tired from chewing that she didn't have too much energy left to play! It was a fun lunch, thank you Grandma!
Anna seems to be feeling better, she still has a little bit of the cough left but not much. And I think what's left of her runny nose is due to teething. One of her bottom teeth is *almost* through the gums. In the mornings you can see the whole top of the tooth, but the gums swell up by the afternoon. One of these mornings we might see the tooth pop through!

Bad Hair Day

*Picture taken on Friday afternoon

This is what happens when:
a) You are awake coughing and not feeling well from 1am - 5am, then up for the day at 7am.
b) You eat your ponytail holder during your nap. (Yes, literally ate it.)

Despite a rough night on Thursday night, Anna was quite the character yesterday. We had fun going to the grocery store and playing indoors for most of the day. Anna is still a little under the weather with a cough and runny nose. If it isn't better by Monday we will go back to the doctor to make sure it hasn't turned into an ear infection. Last night was a lot better though and she didn't even wake up with the very big and very LOUD storms last night! The rain and wind was pelting the windows on the back of our house so hard that I thought they might blow in!! Fortunately the worst that happened was some displaced deck furniture, no damage though.

Wanting to Practice

The other day, Anna started putting her legs out to stand when I would try to set her on the floor, rather than folding them under her to sit. This is a rather big deal for Anna, as up to this point she has really refused to stand unless she is standing against a favorite toy, or something has REALLY got her attention. I was so happy to see this! She also has been wanting to practice walking quite often holding hands. Considering a week or so ago she would only take 1 or 2 steps if forced, this is pretty good progress! I think Anna just has to do things on her own timeline. :)

Here are a few videos of her "walking":

A Little Mischief

Nothing wrong with that! Now that Anna is more mobile, she has become curious about things such as cupboards, drawers, shelves, and all of the wonderful treasures she can find in each! Looks like we need to take the next step in babyproofing our home. Oh how things have changed!

Happy Birthday Grandpa!

We hope you have a wonderful birthday today! Anna says hello and wishes you a happy birthday, she was clapping for you in the 2nd picture. We look forward to celebrating with you tonight! Happy happy birthday to a wonderful dad and grandpa!

Celebrating 11 Months

Today we celebrate 11 months of having Anna in our lives. To commemorate the day, I thought we might try something new for lunch. Anna has mastered the art of baby fruits and veggies, deli meats, chicken chunks, and real fruits. However, we haven't tried many pastas or grains and we haven't been too great about the veggies. Looking for a new way to get some nutritious and different things, we picked up a few Gerber Toddler Graduates meals at Target this morning. They looked good - particularly the one with pasta stars in meat sauce and a side of real green beans (not the mushed up ones).

Very excited to try it, I heated it up and even tasted it myself. Pretty good! So, while the pasta was cooling I had Anna try a green bean. You would have thought she was being poisoned. She sat there and cried (loudly) until I had to take my finger and sweep the bean out. Hmmm. Time to try the pasta. Same thing.

So, I resorted to thinking about what some of the parenting books I have been reading as of late have talked about. Basically they stress that mealtime at this age should be focused on discovery and learning, and not necessarily on what actually gets eaten. "Let them touch the food, play with the spoon and make a mess." So...that's what we did, and with spaghetti no less.

It worked. She didn't eat ALL of it, but she sure ate more with her hands and by manning the spoon herself than I could get in her mouth. Too bad those books don't tell you about the hour it takes to clean up afterwards - the bath, the wash down of the floor, table, high chair, and that you *may* ruin an outfit. Oh well, it was worth it.

** I am having some difficulty with the flash on my camera, so these pics are a little dark.

Wonderful Holiday

Cheers mates! I am back from a lovely holiday in England! I had a wonderful time with my good friend Andrea and her husband Sean and daughter Isabella. It went by so quickly, I really cannot believe that I am already home!!

We did so much in a short span of time, yet managed to have plenty of time to relax too! I spent the first few days of my trip at Andrea's home in Cheltenham, England. Cheltenham is about 2-2.5 hours west of London and is a beautiful town in the Cotswolds. The countryside is quite beautiful there, and Cheltenham is much bigger than I had expected. It has a beautiful downtown area, lots of parks and nice homes. Andrea and Sean have a lovely home and it was so nice of them to let me stay! It was great to spend time with Isabella as well, I hadn't seen her since she was only 9 months old and what a difference! She is a bubbly, sweet little girl - we had fun playing puzzles and going to the park. Andrea and I also toured a small village near her home called Bourton-on-the-Water. It was so pretty and quaint. Very much what you might imagine a little town of bed and breakfasts might be in the middle of the English countryside.

Andrea and I then spent the weekend in Bath, England - home of the Roman Baths. We stayed at a gorgeous hotel, where we pampered ourselves by getting our nails done and massages. Ahhh, it was relaxing! But we also spent many hours walking through the many streets of Bath, looking at the shops, touring the Roman baths (so cool!) having yummy hot chocolates in little cafes, and enjoying the beautiful weather. It was fantastic! I would definitely return to that city if I ever have the opportunity.

Most of all I just enjoyed time with Andrea and her family. Thank you Andrea, Sean and Isabella for a lovely time!
