like a weed

Friday afternoon I took Anna to the doctor for a quick visit - she has a pretty bad diaper rash that I wanted to get some prescription medicine for. Anna had finished up a fun day at "school" and was in great spirits even though she had only had a one hour nap that day. At the doctor we were able to get a weight check and Anna is growing like a weed!!!
Since we were at the doctor 2+ weeks ago, Anna has gained almost 2 pounds! She is now 18lbs 5oz, and 30 inches long. We figured she was gaining weight, but who knew she could grow that much! That was her biggest spurt yet. I think the whole milk is certainly making a difference...and since changing sippy cups, Anna has gone from drinking 12-16oz. per day to 20-28oz. per day!

seeking advice
I know there are many people who read this blog. Many of whom have had experience raising or caring for children. Some with more experience than others, some I know well, some I sort of know, and some I have never met. To all of you...I am soliciting your advice and ideas. Please feel free to leave me a comment here or send me an email if you would prefer. I would love to hear your advice, experiences, and/or ideas.
Today we started music class - something that I thought Anna would thoroughly enjoy since she likes listening to music, singing and dancing. I was correct, Anna did in fact enjoy the class and loved seeing all of the other children (about 15 in the class). The problem, or my problem anyway, is that Anna is all over the place. She will not sit still, even in my lap, for longer than 1 minute.
I know this is characteristic of a 13 month old, especially one who has just figured out how she can move and how quickly she can get around. But...picture this: we are in a class of about 15 kids with their parent or caregiver. Most of whom are sitting on the floor, on their mom's lap, or standing nearby. Some may move around a little bit, dance, walk around or crawl a few feet away, but they stay fairly close.
Then, enters Anna. She crawls out of my arms and up to every single child and parent and says hi, crawls on them, touches their face, head and hair, pulls their socks, takes their instruments, and sits in the middle of the circle and sways to the music - yelling (or singing, not sure what you would call it). She also crawls up onto the instructor while she is teaching/singing. In many ways this is both cute and funny. But in others, it is stressful for me as her mom. While some of the other moms did not mind and played with Anna, there were a few others who were not as welcoming. In fact, there were a few that you could tell were quite perturbed that I did not have "control" of my child.
Here lies my dilemma. Do I follow her and pick her up every time she invades someone else's space? Do I discipline her for not sitting still? Is that even fair to expect at this age? I know she can't comprehend sharing yet...so it's normal for her to take things away from other kids, but what do I do/say when she does this?
One option is to quit the music class and return when she is older and can understand. My apprehension in doing this is that Anna is very social and obviously loves interacting with other kids and being in social situations. Part of me thinks that as we continue to do more of this the novelty of "other kids" will diminish.
If we continue in the class (it's 1x / week for 8 weeks), I need some advice on things I can do so that we do not disrupt the experience for the other children and parents. Toys, food, drink, etc are not allowed in the class - so I don't have anything other than myself and my lovely singing voice to entertain her. :)
Advice is welcome!!

a day at the lake
on the go
Those are the words I think best describes Anna at this stage. From the time she wakes up, to the time she goes to bed, she is truly "on the go". We have been experiencing a number of changes around here...
1. Morning naps are optional. Some days Anna sleeps for 2 hours in the morning, some days for 20 minutes. Lately it's been of the 20 minute variety, and then it's back to "go, go, go" until she crashes for her afternoon nap.
2. Bedtime has moved!!! Yes, we tried AGAIN - this time just cold turkey to the time we want her to go to bed (7pm) and it seems to be working. Anna now gets up somewhere in the sixes (sometimes even 7am!) versus somewhere in the fives. Very nice indeed.
3. I am now addicted to caffeine. I have never been addicted to caffeine in my life, but after drinking coffee every morning for the past several weeks (and sometimes in the afternoons too), I experienced my first caffeine headache this week after trying to abstain from a cup. I caved.
4. Cruising the furniture and people are the new thing. As is standing up hanging on to something, then letting go and falling down. Anna also likes to walk with you holding both of her hands.
5. People are Anna's favorite jungle gym. She can play for 20 minutes at a stretch just climbing and crawling all over me.
6. New sippy cup is a hit. Due to this new cup, Anna is drinking significantly more milk than before and seems to be gaining weight. Whoo hoo!
7. Anna's favorite word is "up". She will tell you "up" when she wants out of her high chair, out of the car seat, up off the floor and just about anywhere she doesn't want to be. Second favorite word is "hot"...which she says as she points to my cup of coffee every morning. I figure my caffeine habit is merely helping her improve her vocabulary.
8. Baths are now in the big person bath tub! Anna doesn't quite know what to think of this, however she can fit more toys and make bigger splashes this way.
9. Game of Chase - Anna's favorite game. She will crawl away from you and then turn around, look at you, laugh and make sure you chase her. This provides for many minutes of entertainment.
10. Her parents are TIRED. :)

wonderful morning
Anna and I had a wonderful morning today! We headed out to the Children's Museum for a morning of fun, learning and exploring. I hadn't been to the Children's Museum since I was little...what a WONDERFUL place it is! There are so many fun things to do, see and play with - for kids of all ages. We will definitely be returning many times this winter!
Anna absolutely loved looking at everything, but most of all she loved the fact that she could just crawl around and touch, feel, smell, taste and play with everything! Her favorite was the "habitot" where she could crawl up ramps, slide down slides, cross bridges, crawl through caves, and just be wild and crazy. We must have spent an hour in that room alone. I was sweating just trying to keep up with her! It was a great way to spend a rainy morning.

i'm a big girl now

We've noticed that Anna has grown a bit taller recently. You can tell by looking at her, but the more noticeable sign is that she can reach so many things that she could not before! Anna has been found playing with cell phones, remotes, magazines, candles, knick-knacks that we thought were "out of reach". Looks like we'll have to make another sweep through! What fun though, she's changing so quickly.
apple orchard

What a beautiful weekend - gorgeous weather and lots of time to play. A highlight of the weekend was spending the afternoon today at a local apple orchard. It was so pretty with the lake nearby and while it is still early in the apple season we were able to sneak home with a few goodies (namely, yummy caramel apples!). We'll be back again soon I am sure!

couldn't resist

Every little girl needs new shoes for the fall right? I think our shopping trip was a success today! This little girl who doesn't normally sleep in the car was found with fingers in her mouth and her other hand playing with her hair within 2 minutes of getting in the car to head home. I think I wore her out!!
girlie day

Today Anna and I are going to have a bit of a "girlie day". After her morning nap we are going to head out to do a little shopping. Anna is all ready for it, can't you tell? I think she, like her mom, likes to shop. Look out Steve! HA!
Yesterday Anna was just a doll. We had a great time playing, running errands, making a turkey, and relaxing. Grandma Mary stopped over for a little bit after school and Anna had to pull out all of the stops for her. She can sing along to a song on her favorite CD now, so she has added that to her dancing. It's quite funny to watch! She has also added a few words to her vocab...words you "may" hear come out of her mouth at times are: mama, dada, papa, up, down, milk, done, poopy pants (at least that's what she "tries" to say), hi, ba-bye, baby, yippee!, Bob (the bus driver of her play bus), and of course all of her animal noises.
Have a wonderful day...we are going to enjoy being girls!

stinky p u
date night
Last night Steve and I were able to get out to celebrate our anniversary - thank you to dad and Penny for coming over to play with Anna while we were out. She loved playing with you, and we certainly appreciate it!
We have so few pictures of just the 2 of us lately, so we had to take one on our anniversary!

something that we do
I think the words to our wedding song say it best - happy anniversary to the wonderful man I married 3 years ago today. I love you with all my heart.
Something That We Do
I remember well the day we wed
I can see that picture in my head
I still believe the words we said
Forever will ring true

I remember well the day we wed
I can see that picture in my head
I still believe the words we said
Forever will ring true
Love is certain, love is kind
Love is yours and love is mine
But it isn't something that we find
It's something that we do
Love is yours and love is mine
But it isn't something that we find
It's something that we do
It's holding tight, lettin' go
It's flying high and laying low
Let your strongest feelings show
And your weakness, too
It's flying high and laying low
Let your strongest feelings show
And your weakness, too
It's a little and a lot to ask
An endless and a welcome task
Love isn't something that we have
It's something that we do
An endless and a welcome task
Love isn't something that we have
It's something that we do
We help to make each other all that we can be

Though we can find our strength and inspiration independently
The way we work together is what sets our love apart
So closely that you can't tell where I end and where you start
It gives me heart remembering how
We started with a simple vow
There's so much to look back on now
Still it feels brand-new
We're on a road that has no end
And each day we begin again
Love's not just something that we're in
It's something that we do
And each day we begin again
Love's not just something that we're in
It's something that we do
Refrain
Love is wide, love is long
Love is deep and love is strong
Love is why I love this song
And I hope you love it too
Love is deep and love is strong
Love is why I love this song
And I hope you love it too
I remember well the day we wed
I can see that picture in my head
Love isn't just those words we said
It's something that we do

I can see that picture in my head
Love isn't just those words we said
It's something that we do
There's no request too big or small
We give ourselves, we give our all
Love isn't someplace that we fall
It's something that we do
We give ourselves, we give our all
Love isn't someplace that we fall
It's something that we do

first day of "school" pictures
proex guy
Yesterday afternoon approximately 4:15pm
I drive to the Proex near the doctor's office that we go to in order to pick up a few pictures. I LOVE this Proex because you can order your prints online and go through the drive-through. I have a happy one-year old in the backseat taking her socks off and laughing.
15 mins later we are still 3rd in line in the drive-thru. So....we back up, park and go in.
Happy one year old turns into screaming (did I mention SCREAMING) child because she wanted to crawl on the filthy floor and I wouldn't let her. My will was stronger though, I was going to get those pictures come heck or high water. As we waited for our turn (screaming continuing), Anna does something she has only done to me a few times....
She wrings her hands and starts YELLING in a deep voice a number of words I can comprehend and others only she can understand as fast as she can with a very deep red tint to her face.
Me: Sheer embarrassment as everyone is looking as I patiently wait out this tantrum to see what I will do/say.
Turns out I didn't have to do anything...
Guy behind the Proex counter: "I didn't know babies could swear, but I am pretty sure she just swore at you".

new stats and 6 hours ahead
new stats
Yesterday we had a very busy day - Anna started the day at 5:20am and was struggling with being overtired and 3 pesky teeth that are trying to get through the gums. Despite a rather frothy demeanor, we headed to visit my friend Deena and her beautiful 2 week old baby girl Avery. While it was a short visit (read: Anna was loudly protesting the fact that she couldn't touch baby Avery's eyes, bite her feet or give her big hugs), we had a wonderful time seeing Deena and this lovely new arrival into their family. Can't wait to spend more time with them in the weeks to come.
In the afternoon, after a much needed nap, happiness and order returned and we headed to the doctor for Anna's one year checkup. Her stats are:
Height: 29.25 inches - 54th percentile
Weight: 16lbs. 13oz. - 2nd percentile
Head Circ: 45cm - 47th percentile
Anna is still a peanut when it comes to her weight. The doctor and I discussed it at length and he feels that she is doing well and that we need not worry. His daughter also fell into a similar place growing up and he said that typically he looks for other signs of issues - such as frequent vomiting or bathroom issues, lack of growth in height and head circ, etc. He said there are always tests that can be run but at this point he doesn't feel the need. I agreed given Anna's disposition, and how well she eats. In addition, it's been a steady curve since she was born - a curve that most other babies follow, she is just on the low end. As the doctor put it "someone has to make up the <5%". So, there we are.
Anna did well with her shots and her finger prick. It was probably harder for me than it was for her - she is so much more expressive now! At least it's over for another 3 months.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6 hours ahead
Today my baby is going to "school" for 6 hours - I plan to call these days that she attends "Anna's Day of Play" vs. the name the school gives it. Despite my lack of sleep last night due to dreams and worry of every possible "what if" that could take place while she is out of my direct care - I am looking forward to the day ahead.
What do I do with 6 hours??? I have a list of a million projects, and another list of another hundred things I would like to do. Yet, I have a feeling I will do a few things, relax and wonder every 15 minutes "what is Anna doing?" "how is Anna doing?".
And hopefully she will be thinking, "Thanks mom, this is so much fun!!!" as she plays with the other 4 one-year olds in her "class".

in her genes
I have written a number of posts about sleep over the course of the past year. It seems to be a hot topic among new parents, parents of newborns and also parents of toddlers. I have spent the morning hours searching the following key words on google to see what I could learn: "how do I get my baby to sleep later in the morning?".
More responses than I could ever read have come back to me, all versions of things I have already read and we have already tried. For example:
More responses than I could ever read have come back to me, all versions of things I have already read and we have already tried. For example:
- try putting your child to bed later, by 15 min increments every 2-3 days
- try putting your child to bed earlier - he/she may be overtired and thus not able to sleep well
- decrease nap time
- increase nap time
- when your child wakes at 5am - 5:30am, try a slimmed down version of the bedtime routine and put them back to bed
- at this age Anna should be getting 14 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period, 11-12 of which will occur at night and the remaining 2-3 during the day (this is already happening so why would I try to change it??)
- when Anna's bedtime is later, she wakes in the middle of the night and is crabby in the morning
- when Anna's bedtime is around 6:30-6:45 (meaning bedtime routine starts at 6 or 6:15), she sleeps very deeply and soundly until the morning and is happy when she wakes up
My conclusion: It's in her genes. Both of her grandpas are early risers (like 4am), so why in the world would I ever think she would be a late sleeper???
I think my next Google search will be "how to wake myself up earlier in the morning and have enough energy to chase around a one year old all day without my own nap". I wonder what response I would get there? COFFEE, lots of it.

Playtime
Today we went to visit our friends Allison and Tyler at their home. What a fun day! Anna and Tyler had fun "sharing" toys and looking at one another. It's fun to see them grow up and interact, soon they will be chasing each other around the yard playing tag, or hide and go seek. Crazy to think about! It was so fun catching up with them again and spending some time together. The little ones even took a nice long afternoon nap, so Allison and I had a chance to have some lunch and catch up!

Thanks so much for a wonderful day Allison and Tyler...can't wait to see you again soon!

Thank You!

Anna had a very enjoyable birthday (all week of it!), but particularly enjoyed spending the afternoon yesterday with many of you for her party. Thank you for driving the distances to see Anna, spend time with her and with us and for the lovely and generous gifts. Anna enjoyed every minute with all of you, and will have lots of fun playing with her new toys, wearing her new clothes, reading books, playing puzzles, cuddling her dolly and stuffed animals, etc.
Anna is so blessed to have so many wonderful grandparents, great-grandparents, uncles, and friends in her life. She certainly knows and feels your love. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts.

One Year
One year ago today our dear daughter Anna was born. What a wonderful day to look back on. So much excitement and anticipation, so many firsts for so many people - parents, grandparents, uncles.
One year gone by and we remember...
* the fear and excitement of going to the hospital * our hearts doubling in size the moment you entered the world * hearing the words "it's a girl" for the first time * naming you "Anna Katherine" * tears of joy for many days following * your tiny hands and feet * diapers so small * your first smile * stroller rides * your first giggle * celebrating the holidays with you * making you laugh * you making us laugh * singing to you * experiencing all of your "firsts" - rolling over, crawling, standing up * swinging at the park * wagon rides * trips to WI * experiencing your love for all of your grandparents * and your love for your uncles * dressing you up in all of your clothes * watching you dance * feeding you "real" food for the first time * listening to you eat "mmmmm" * hearing your first words * going to pick you up each morning * middle of the night cuddles * reading you stories * the overwhelming sense of pride each time we look at you * how very very much we love you and always will

Birthday Celebration
Today Uncle Matt had the day off from work and came over to play and celebrate Anna's birthday! Matt is standing up in the wedding of one of his good friends this weekend, so he wanted to get some celebrating in early! Seeing it is "birthday week" and all, it sounded like fun to us!!!
Anna had a great time showing Matt all of her toys and telling him "hi" at least 50 times. She would go to her toys, turn, point at Matt and say "hi"...making sure he was watching her at all times. Uncle Matt came laden with fun gifts for Anna - starting football season off with a bang by outfitting Anna in a cheerleading outfit that will fit this season! Complete with pom pom and all! Can't wait to see daddy's face when she's dressed in that!
And, now Anna can cruise around the house (and yard) in her brand new set of wheels. It goes without saying that Anna absolutely loved her new toys and outfit. But most of all she (and I) enjoyed spending the morning with Matt. Thanks so much for coming over Matt and for making Anna's birthday special!
