pigtails and ladies who lunch

Thank you Rachel for your wonderful suggestion of pigtails! I thought that because they are close enough for her little hands to reach easily that she would yank them right out. Instead she has found some fascination in twirling them around her fingers - and they remain in tact! Not to mention, they look much cuter than the Pebbles (from the Flintstones) look that we had been inadvertently been getting previously. Thanks for the suggestion! We'll see if they last through her nap...she has been known to eat the ponytail holders. :)

Today I decided to take Anna out to lunch after music class because she did GREAT at music. She danced, sang, played instruments, talked to other kids without any misbehavior (hitting, crawling on top of, pulling hair, etc). AND, inspired by the older kids around her...Anna stood up in the middle of the room and remained standing for a good 30 seconds! Multiple times! This was a very exciting feat, she is gaining her balance quickly - which will be key to taking a first step. It was so cute to watch!

When she stands up on her own at home I tend to make a very big deal out of it in order to encourage the behavior. I say "YEAH!" and clap and dance around. Well, Anna has now taken it upon herself to repeat this behavior, for herself, when she stands up. It's pretty hilarious to watch her standing up on her wobbly legs, yelling "YEAH!" and trying to clap.

So, we had a celebration lunch - or brunch, since it was scrambled eggs and french toast. Anna did great in the restaurant as well. Only 2 chunks of food were flung to the floor (miracle!), and she even ate her eggs. It made me think of all the lunches she and I will have together in the future. I will treasure this first one the two of us shared forever.

mom, i told you...

I DON'T LIKE PONYTAILS!!!!

getting stronger

Anna's legs are getting stronger every day. She now will walk all along the furniture and will transfer from one piece to the next without sitting down. She can climb in and out of her chair in her playroom, and on top of and off of her ride alongs. Anna will climb on and off, on and off, for half an hour! It's fun to watch her gain confidence and look for your approval as she masters these new feats. I would imagine that one of these days she will be venturing out to take a step or two.

'tis the season

...for decorating the house, lighting the tree, making cookies, drinking hot chocolate and coffee, sipping a good glass of wine, listening to Christmas music, shopping, wrapping gifts, taking pictures and writing letters

...for the giving, rather than receiving

...for the joy in the little things and the beauty in anticipation

bankie

Up until this point, Anna has not had a "lovey" that she has become particularly attached to. We haven't pushed it, we figured when she was interested in something she would let us know.

When the weather turned colder a few weeks ago, I began wrapping Anna in a blanket when I would bring her out to the car and would nestle it around her in her carseat. This went on for a few days and soon Anna was pulling the blanket up to her face and cuddling it, always wanting it on her while she was the car. By the time we returned home from our Thanksgiving journey she was already calling it "bankie".

"Bankie" is now accompanying Anna to her naps and to bed at night. Today, when she woke up from her afternoon nap, "bankie" had to come with us downstairs. She needed a few more minutes to cuddle with it while she drank her milk.

I don't know if "bankie" is here to stay, or if this is a passing love affair, but for the time being Anna is finding comfort in this gorgeous soft blanket that she received as a gift when she was born.

happy thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to our family and friends!

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration - filled with lots of turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie and laughter. We just returned from a week in Wisconsin, where we celebrated Thanksgiving and spent lots of time with Nana, Papa and Uncle Nate. Anna enjoyed all of the attention, good food and laughter. Steve and I enjoyed each moment as well! We did some Christmas shopping, ate WAY too much, visited with family (great to see you Rich, Barb and Kayla!), played around the house, went to see Christmas lights and reindeer, relaxed and did I mention ate WAY too much?! What a wonderful week...thank you so much for making this Thanksgiving so special Jim and Norma.

We have so much to be thankful for this year!

over the river and through the woods...

...to Chloe's house we go!

Yesterday Anna and I picked up my friends Kim, Bethany and Bethany's son Joseph and headed out to visit our friend Chloe and her triplets Avery, Sophia and Hannah. It was a fun day! All of the kids had a great time playing, sharing books, toys, and eating lunch together. It was funny having a table of 9 people, only 4 of which were adults! We were busy playing and catching up that none of us got any pictures (can you believe that!?). Next time!

It seems like just yesterday that those 3 little girls were born and now they are almost 2 and a half. They are adorable. As is Joe! What a content and smiley little guy he is. You can tell he's learning a lot from his big brother. It's fun to see your college friends as parents, and to get to know their children. I hope this will always be the case.

While the car trips each way were long (almost 3 hours each way for Anna and I!), it was well worth the adventure. Once again I was reminded that I have such wonderful friends to be thankful for.

tyler comes to play

When Anna woke up this morning, I told her about our plan for the day which was a visit from our friends Allison and Tyler. As soon as I mentioned Tyler's name, Anna said "BABY!" with a big smile. She knew who was coming to play! She continued to talk about the "BABY!", until Tyler himself arrived.

It was so cute to watch the two of them. They are almost exactly 5 months apart in age, but that span is becoming smaller and smaller as they learn to interact and to play together. When Tyler arrived, he and Anna sat on the floor facing one another with their feet intertwined. They would kick and smile and reach out for one another. They squealed and talked, it was fun to see them so excited! The first 20 minutes was such a flurry of excitement, both Allison and I were cracking up!

We spent the day playing around the house since it was so cold out today. They enjoyed playing toys, eating lunch, and playing peek-a-boo. Thanks for coming over Allison and Tyler, we had a wonderful day!

mommy's little helper

Anna loves to "help" me with the laundry whenever she can. Typically this means taking each item of clothing and putting it into a bucket, then taking it out, unfolding folded items and just jumping in the pile. It's fun to watch her "help", and to see how much fun she has with it. I wonder if someday she really will enjoy folding laundry....hmmm, I'll have to work on that!

like father, like daughter

To know Steve is to know that he loves cheese. Cheese of all kinds. The older and the stinkier the better.

The apple has not fallen far from the tree. When Anna moved to whole milk, we incorporated cheese into her diet so that we would make sure she was getting enough dairy and fat. She is now certainly drinking enough milk, but she still likes her daily serving (or 2) of cheese. For her morning snack, she almost always has cheese and crackers. If she takes a morning nap she will wake up and say "cheeeeese"....she knows what time it is.

I am also learning that cheese can be a help in getting Anna to eat things she doesn't normally like. She will now eat homemade macaroni and cheese - which I make with ring macaroni, whole milk and her cheese of choice. I can sometimes hide some ground hamburger in there too.

Today I steamed cauliflower and put it in the food processor, mixed it with cheese and told her it was cheesy potatoes. She ate the whole bowl. That is probably the biggest serving of veggies she has ever eaten.

So, if you have any other suggestions for veggies with a touch of cheese - send them my way, I am willing to give them a try!

14 months: in review

Today you are 14 months old. Wow. I can hardly believe you are becoming less of a "baby" and more of a "toddler" with each passing day. Although, you will always be my baby.

At 14 months old you are experiencing your first serious illness. You have pneumonia, and are on day 4 of medication. Yesterday was the sickest I have ever seen you. But through this I have learned that you are a very resilient sick person! You still smile. You still play (although perhaps not as much). You are still good natured for as crummy as you feel. You are a trooper.

At 14 months you are not quite yet walking. You love to practice with mom, dad or anyone who will walk with you all around the house. You get going so fast that sometimes it seems we are practically running to keep up. I think you probably could walk a bit without our hands, but you just aren't quite ready to let go. And that's ok with me. I'm not ready to let go either. You are only this small once.

You get braver and more adventurous each day. You climb on things. Things that are high. Higher than I like since you haven't figured out how to get down yet! You crawl into things. You pull things out of cupboards. You reach things on shelves and tables that I didn't know you could reach....but you found your tip toes. You are resourceful.
At 14 months you are saying quite a few words - probably 20. Recently you have learned to say your name. You point at pictures of yourself and say "Anna, Anna, Anna" over and over and over. You love to look at the picture book of our family and tell us who everyone is. You still love to say "up", "down", "hi", and now a new favorite....."vac".

"Vac" is the vacuum. You are obsessed with the vacuum. You are scared to death of the vacuum. The vacuum is the most fascinating thing you have ever seen. When it's on, the tears pour down your cheeks so fast that it must be turned off and returned to its home. FAST. When it's off, you point to the closet in which it lives and say "VAC!" until I open the door so you can wave "hi", "ba-bye" or "ni-night" to it. You wake up in the morning talking about the "vac". I think you probably dream about the "vac".

At 14 months you are still very independent. You like to play with people when they are around, but you like to direct the play. You like to decide what will be read to you, or played with. You know what you want.

You are not afraid of people. You say "hi" to everyone you meet at the grocery store, at Target, and anywhere we go. You also call many men walking by "dada" - which I am sure scares the crap out of some of them. HA! You do know who your daddy is though. He is definitely the most important man in your life. Let's keep it that way for a loooooong time, ok?

You are learning to cuddle for a little while at night. However, after you have cuddled for a few minutes...rather than fall asleep in our arms listening to music, you point to your crib and say "ni-ni" (night-night) and then smile when we put you in bed. While that is nice for us in many ways, we also love those nights when you will cuddle a little longer. One night while you've been sick you slept in my arms for an hour. I wasn't going to let go. Had you not woken up, I would have stayed with you there in my arms all night.

At 14 months you are drinking whole milk. You are eating a variety of table foods including meats, cheese, fruit, grains. Vegetables are not your favorite, although you have been experimenting a little bit. When you don't like/want something, or just want to torture your parents, you throw your food on the floor. This happens A LOT. In fact, it happens so often that we have spent over $50 on books on how and when to incorporate discipline (different from punishment) into our lives. So far...the books aren't helping. You love to drop your food, look at us and say "uh-ee" (your version of uh-oh). It's funny, and not so funny, all at the same time.

At 14 months your personality is blossoming. We are learning more about you every day. You love to giggle and laugh. You love to listen to music - to sing and dance. More than anything you love attention. You love when you are surrounded by people and can show off all of your tricks. You love to play games like peek-a-boo, chase and stinky p u. You know how to fake a cry or a wimper to get what you want from someone who doesn't realize it's not real. You also like a certain amount of alone time. This is typically in your crib before you fall asleep for a nap or at night. You play, sing and talk yourself to sleep. It's your downtime. You need it, because all day you are very busy.

At 14 months, your parents have experienced some new challenges. How and when to incorporate discipline. How to go from 2 naps to 1. Finding enough positive activities to keep you entertained and educated throughout the weeks. What to do when your child is very sick. We are a team though, we will always be a team. And we will always learn, and change and try to be the best parents we can to you. We love you, so much.

14 months have passed already. We have enjoyed each one for different reasons and look forward to what comes in the next. You are a joy, and we are so very thankful for YOU.

catching up

I think we are turning the corner. Anna went to bed last night at 5:45pm and slept through without making a peep until 6:45am today. It was a much needed rest. She woke up happy for the first time in several days. No cries!

Anna appears to have a little appetite today. She ate breakfast for the first time in 4 days and kept it down. She is already down for her nap...her anti-nausea medicine makes her extremely drowsy. This was the last dose of that medicine, so we are hopeful that her upset tummy will be gone moving forward. She appears to be more playful than yesterday and certainly more comfortable. Yeah!

All of us were able to catch up on our sleep last night. Thanks again for all of your phone calls, emails and for my family for stopping by - much appreciated!

update

It's been a long few days.

We have moments of time when it seems Anna is doing better, she plays and jabbers and crawls around. And then there are moments when it seems Anna is having difficulty breathing, or coughing or talking.

Yesterday was an ok day. Anna did well in the afternoon, we made forts, played on and in boxes, and tried to have fun with an indoor day. Short naps however made the evening pretty trying, as Anna was exhausted - to the point where she just couldn't sleep at night. She woke up quite scared a few times, and didn't truly fall asleep until after midnight.

This morning Anna's cough seems to have gotten worse and she is quite tired/slow. We decided to bring her in just to make sure that she is not getting worse. Fortunately her oxygen levels are in the high 90's, so she is getting enough air. We just need to continue with the antibiotics and let it run it's course.

It's so hard to see her feeling so poorly. I wish it were me who had this rather than her. Hopefully after some good sleep today she will be feeling a little better. Thanks for all of your concern and cares!

quite a morning

After a rough night last night, we decided to bring Anna to the local urgent care this morning to make sure that her cough was not turning into something else. Despite a cough and a slight fever, Anna was in good spirits and didn't appear too sick. She has had a little cough that has become louder and more frequent since Thursday.

After a few minutes at urgent care we were informed that Anna's blood oxygen levels were quite low and that she would need some chest x-rays. Rather than do that there and then get transferred to the hospital where we would have to do the same things all over again - we decided to take Anna to Children's right away.

Fortunately Anna got sick in the car. Yes, fortunately. That seemed to clear up whatever was blocking the oxygen as her levels were back to normal once we arrived at Children's. A few hours later after monitoring, they decided to do an x-ray since there had been a low reading earlier. Much to their surprise (and ours) we found out that Anna has pneumonia.

The good thing is, we caught it early and she now has antibiotics to ward it off, along with some medicine to help with the nausea. We are so happy we decided to take her in (we weren't sure because it didn't seem real serious this morning), as we hopefully have avoided an extended hospital stay.

Our little baby is sleeping now. I have to admit I was pretty scared for awhile! I am so happy I have such an amazing husband who asks lots of questions and keeps things moving in the E.R. when things are taking too long. Oh, and doing all of that while soothing his little baby, AND me.

reflection

Mirror, mirror
2 (and a half!) feet tall
How can my reflection
be so small?

In looks alone
it's not me I see
Rather, your daddy's big blue eyes
staring back at me

But in your expressions
and your actions too
There's a little of me, in
little
ol'
you

Born or bred?
we'll never know
But a piece of me, in you
does grow

Mirror, mirror
2 (and a half) feet tall
I'll love you always, big and small

2 - 1 = 0

No, I haven't forgotten how to do math. Here's how it goes...

2 naps - 1 nap =

0 ideas on how I can get done in one nap what I used to do in two

0 days I can sleep until Anna wakes, because sleeping in = no shower until after noon

0 plans for how to fill 2 five hour stretches of time with my little one

OK, in all reality it isn't that bad. In fact...this transition has been much easier than 3 naps to 2, so far.

I have been looking forward to Anna moving to just one nap for a long time. I figured I would wait and let her indicate when she was ready to drop her morning nap. For the past several weeks, Anna has been playing for longer periods of time in her crib when she is supposed to be napping. For example, she would go down at 9 for her morning nap and play until 9:45 before she would fall asleep. Then, if she slept for a little while, she wouldn't sleep in the afternoon. Or vice versa.

So, this week I decided to try moving to one nap. This means that our schedule has been tipped upside-down (which is harder for me than it is for Anna I am embarrassed to admit). Snack is earlier, Lunch is earlier and nap begins around 12pm. Eventually this will move later - to about 1pm, but at this point between 11:30 and 12 seems to be as long as Anna will make it.

I am learning quite quickly that I need to come up with some more activities for the winter months (and moving forward) - 5+ hour stretches of play time are tougher to fill! In time I know that I will LOVE this new schedule. It will give us so much freedom to set up play dates with friends that live further way, to explore more museums, zoos and parks, to spend more time outside. As the weeks go on we will get in our groove, but until then...understand if we seem a little helter-skelter.
